Bills on a roll, Winning Four Straight Games, First Time in 5 Years
I covered the 49ers – Bills game Sunday with the added intrigue of Colin Kaepernick making his first start as quarterback of the Niners.
The Bills were on a roll, having won three straight for the first time in 5 years and doing it against a trio of tough defensive teams, two of which Buffalo had to beat on the road.
Let’s face it, even facing a third-string quarterback, beating the Pats and blanking them in Gillette Stadium is a pretty solid achievement.
But all of that took a back-seat to Kaepernick’s start with all the wonderment of what would it be like for a player who refused to stand for the National Anthem to actually face the pressure of how the crowd would react and how he would react having not thrown a pass in a year.
I talked with him the day before the game. I broke the ice saying I thought I had read something about him in the news but was not sure.It brought a smile to his face since, as we all know, Colin Kaepernick has been in the headlines almost as much as the two Presidential candidates. Almost, I said.
We talked of the upcoming game, not his actions prior.
He talked about how much he was itching to get back to playing after three surgeries which ultimately sapped his strength.
Ultimately it all came down to a football game. Here’s what it was all about.
Colin Kaepernick did not play badly at all. He happens to be on a team that is sub-par.
The 49ers are not a good team. But the team they played is.
The Buffalo Bills, taking a back-seat to the first start of a controversial quarterback on the other side, wound up in the drivers seat.
They made it four in a row and solidified their prospects as a strong AFC playoff contender.
You see, after all the “intrigue” surrounding Kaepernick’s first start, it came down to a football game. And the Buffalo Bills transcended the “story” of the game.
They were the game.
